Beautiful weather. Wonderful cars. Great people. Old friends. New friends. That is what the Porsche Werks Reunion is all about.
Oh, yea. And there is a little car show over the weekend – the Amelia Island Concours de Elegance.
For the past many years, we have attended and participated in the Porsche Werks Reunion at the Amelia Island Concours weekend near Jacksonville, Florida. This year we featured three 924S’s from our 924S944.com group – Sparky and TWO Special Edition 924S’s.
The 2020 Porsche Werks Reunion happened quite literally days before the Covid shutdowns started. The Concours weekend is normally in March, but for 2021 Covid moved it to the end of May. Timing could not have been better – lots of people having a great time and lots of beautiful Porsches. And Florida Citrus Region was well represented on the judged field.
For the past many years, we have attended and participated in the Porsche Werks Reunion This year we featured three 924S’s from our Florida group, including TWO Special Edition 924S’s. Greg and Jennifer Barrows were awarded a second-place trophy for their blue 968 and Nort Northam won a third place trophy for his 924S Special Edition. Nort also displayed his 1989 911 Speedster.
The PCA tent was working hard to promote the PCA Sim Racing Series. A simulator was set up for sim drivers to test their skills at Daytona International Speedway, and our own Chris Duffy – prominent and popular PCA Sim Racer– was invited early in the day to lay down a couple of laps in the simulator. In two laps he set a time at 1:48 to provide a target for the day. No one was able to beat it all day – fast time of the day.
Along with the Friday Porsche Werks Reunion, many from Florida Citrus Region also brought their cars to the Amelia Island Cars and Coffee on Saturday morning. Pre-registration is required for participation in this annual event, and we registered back in November 2020 to be sure we were there. Our 924S Special Edition was parked next to Nort Northam’s 911 Speedster with both garnering a lot of attention. Hundreds of cars populated the Concours field including Doc Brown’s “slightly modified” Delorean – the actual car used in the Back To The Future movies. Corvettes, Mustangs, BMWs, Minis, Alfas – all there. Nice way to spend a Saturday morning.
How about a Lemons 944 Race Car with the Dodge Cummings Diesel sticking out of the hood?
Next year’s Amelia Island Concours will go back to the March dates – Friday through Sunday, March 4-6. The Porsche Werks Reunion will be on Friday, March 4, with the Cars and Coffee on Saturday, March 5. Do you want to go? Here are some tips.
- Registration for the Werks Reunion opens in December. Register early. Pay the little extra to get on the judged field – that’s where the action is!
- Registration for the Cars and Coffee usually opens in November. There is a limited number of spots available, and it fills quickly.
- Accommodations for the weekend are usually sold out very early – make reservations now. Consider AirBnB as well as area hotels. At this writing, accommodations are getting difficult to find – so act now.
- A day trip for the Porsche Werks Reunion is also an alternative to spending the weekend, but there is so much to do, spending the weekend is best!
For us the Amelia Island weekend is the best. However, you must plan well in advance and make sure that you make the most of it!
