Sunroof Gear Cover Solution

Most of our cars were delivered with power sunroofs.  The gears strip, they get out of time, and they sometimes leak.  In previous articles, we have talked about how to fix these issues, but we have said nothing about the panel that covers the sunroof gear between the sunroof itself and the rear hatch.

As with any piece of upholstery in a car that is three decades old, these sunroof gear covers get nasty.  They were originally made from molded fiber board, then covered with black vinyl.  If the rear hatch leaks, the sunroof gear cover gets wet and sags.  Time and heat also take their tool, and it’s pretty ugly when you can see the rear edge of the cover hanging down unevenly through the rear hatch.  There has to be a better way.

sunroof coverHere at, I just ordered my THIRD fiberglass replacement sunroof cover from Texas Performance Concepts located in…wait for it…Texas.  Arlington, Texas, to be exact.  They have lots of fiberglass parts for the 944 and 924S, and their solution to the saggy sunroof gear cover is wonderful.  As I said, I have used two already and just ordered another one.  In fact, Sparky has one.

The piece comes packed in a wooden crate to avoid damage – again, attention to detail is big here.  It is done in black gelcoat that has a mild sheen to it.  On the first one, I painted it with satin black rattle can paint, and it looks great.  The second one was for Sparky, and that one I just left alone.  The one I just ordered will go into another rescued white 924S, and I will attempt to cover it in black vinyl like the original.

The dimples and the screw holes are all in the perfect places for easy installation.  It just bolts up and you’re done!

So if you need a solution for that saggy, nasty cover, give them a try.  They work and look great!
