Here at 924S944.com and .store we have had a bad habit of posting April 1st articles where we make stuff up and try to see how many of our readers get sucked in. We unfortunately have to admit that these articles have, for the most part, been wildly successful. While we would like to apologize, we were raised by the rule to “never lie.” So…no, we’re not sorry for it.
On April 1, 2021, we published PORSCHE ANNOUNCES THE NEW 944 – FINALLY. This article started out with “Porsche has announced that it will bring back the 944 model in 2023 as its low-cost entry to the specialty sports car market. The cars will be built in Germany at a factory currently under renovation and retooling outside of Stuttgart.” The article promised a 2.7 flat-six turbo out of the 718 Cayman with 345 HP and great fuel economy. There were quotes from Hans Becker, the Projeckt 944 Brand Manager, talking about the “MMS” – Multiple Modular Subframe design that would allow many different engine, transmission and driveline variants, including electric power. The new car had the internal designation of “744” but would be marketed as the “944.” Since being published in 2021, there have been 8,700 views of this article, with 39 views in March 2024. If you Google “Porsche New 944,” this article is the fifth choice on the list behind four articles about the history of the 944, all published by Porsche.com.
The popularity of this article shows that the 944 and its variants are truly timeless Porsches. As used 944’s go up in price – a really nice turbo sold for $22,500 on BAT recently – we see that they are in demand. Maybe Porsche should think about bringing it back…
We came back the next year with ELECTRIFICATION ON A BUDGET on April 1, 2023. With the growing popularity of electric and hybrid cars at the time, this story really did suck in a bunch of folks – but not as popular as the year before. In this one we discussed how a company in Wisconsin called 944Electric developed an electric motor system that replaced the transaxle while keeping the stock engine in place – a hybrid that would boost power by adding about 140 HP to the driveline. The batteries for the motor were installed in the luggage area, Since publication, 2,356 folks have viewed this one. And in the article was a link to 944Electric.com where a ton of folks went to get more information. While we kept that site active for a couple of years, it is now inactive.
This year we are taking a break from our “spoof” articles on April Fool’s Day 2024. Just know that while we decided to take a break, we are quickly coming up with new ideas for you for April 1, 2025!
